Rick Perry has signed a pledge to back a federal constitutional amendment against gay marriage - a reversal from a month ago when the Texas governor said he so supported individual states' rights that he was fine with New York's approval of same-sex marriage. [...] While far from a surprise, Perry's decision raised some eyebrows because it appears to contradict his previous position that this is an issue that should be left up to individual legislatures.Perry won applause at a Republican conference in Colorado on July 22 when he said of New York's same-sex marriage law, "that's New York, and that's their business, and that's fine with me."
I guess even Rick Perry's big Texas swagger was no match for his party's anti-gay bigotry, but in his defense, aside from the flip-flop on the states' rights question, he's been an anti-gay bigot on pretty much everything else throughout his entire career.
For example, in 2008 he wrote that being gay is like being an alcoholic. He even supports unconstitutional anti-sodomy laws. And now he's endorsed changing the U.S. Constitution so the guys (or gals) next door can't get hitched. But that's not all he endorsed. Check out the pledge's fourth clause:
Four, establish a presidential commission on religious liberty to investigate and document reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened for exercising key civil rights to organize, to speak, to donate or to vote for marriage and to propose new protections, if needed.
So Rick Perry not only wants to ban gay marriage, but he also thinks we need a commission to investigate "straight-bashing"? That's insane. How in the world do they come up with this stuff?
