Opposition to Boehner plan mounts from conservative groups

With Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi working to defeat it and President Obama issuing a veto threat over it, things aren't looking good for John Boehner's debt limit plan and its $1.8 trillion cut to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. It's not just Democrats who oppose it, however; House Republicans aren't sold on his plan either:
House Republican leaders Tuesday made increasingly frenzied pleas to their members to approve a plan to temporarily raise the nation?s debt ceiling, but passage seemed in growing doubt. The White House reiterated that it strongly opposed the bill and that President Obama?s advisers would recommend a veto should it somehow pass the House and Senate.

Scores of the House?s most conservative members pored over the details presented by the Republican leaders and concluded they did not like what they saw.

With the fate of Boehner's bill in doubt, conservative groups have spent the day picking sides, trying to influence the battle. Here's a quick run-down of where several key right-wing groups stand:

For Boehner's plan?
? U.S. Chamber of Commerce
? Americans for Tax Reform

Against Boehner's plan?
? Heritage Action Fund
? Club for Growth
? Americans for Prosperity
? FreedomWorks
? Cut, Cap, and Balance Coalition
? National Taxpayers Union

It's no surprise that the two groups Boehner has on his side are establishment Republican groups with a greater interest in corporate lobbying than in right-wing ideology. And each of the groups that that position themselves as being closer to grassroots conservatives opposes the measure. That gives you a sign of where this thing is headed: down.
