Daily Kos Elections Weekend Digest

Tuesday, Aug. 9. It's on.

Election junkies enjoyed a week of intriguing data, to be sure, as we opened up the month of August. There were some real horse race numbers developing in key states, portending a razor-thin margin of victory in the 2012 White House sweepstakes. We also saw more states finishing up their redistricting, including a hugely disappointing failure of a Democratic state legislature to be as ruthless as ... well ... any GOP state lege would have been.

Add to that some actual vote tallying (you know you were up all night hitting "refresh" to know who would emerge as the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in Mississippi), and it was a full week in the world of electoral politics. Right on cue, the weekend wrap is here to take you through the highlight reel.

And on that highlight reel this week:

  • One race that Republicans had their eye on once upon a time, according to new polling, is most definitely not gonna be a race. Find out where the GOP is already packing up their wagons and heading down the line.
  • It had to happen: a major pollster tested the viability of a primary challenger to Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for president. Find out who, where and how viable that primary challenge would be.
  • Go beneath the fold to learn the current state of play as we head into Recall Week in the Badger State. New polling leaked out that sounds very good for the blue team, but read why at least one Democratic pollster is urging cautious optimism.

All this (and quite a bit more) in this "counting the minutes to vacation" version of the weekend digest.
